Cultivating Your Person
Living a Virtuous Life!
On personal cultivation as dependent on the rectification of the mind.
1. What is meant by, "The cultivation of the person depends on rectifying the mind," may be thus illustrated:-- If a man be under the influence of passion, he will be incorrect in his conduct. He will be the same, if he is under the influence of terror, or under the influence of fond regard, or under that of sorrow and distress.
2. When the mind is not present, we look and do not see; we hear and do not understand; we eat and do not know the taste of what we eat.
3. This is what is meant by saying that the cultivation of the person depends on the rectifying of the mind.
-The Great Learning – Confucious
“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” – Proverbs 23:7
“The things you think about determine the quality of your mind. Your soul takes on the color of your thoughts”
– Marcus Aurelius – Roman Emperor
In the book of Galatians 5:22 – 23 it says the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. The Eight Confucian Virtues are; Benevolence, Righteousness, Courtesy, Wisdom, Fidelity, Loyalty, Filial Piety and Service to Elders. The seven virtues of Bushido (Samurai) are as follows; Rectitude (justice), Courage, Benevolence, Politeness, Honor, Loyalty and Self Control.
All the above statements are a guidepost for successful living. You will notice that these virtues span the breadth of human history and they ring true today. In order to rectify your mind you must first adopt the above mentioned virtues. Adopting these virtues takes work, you, in many cases must unlearn many of the things you have operated by for years.
The Samurai of Ancient Japan gave us the Four Oaths: Never be late with respect to the Way of the Warrior, Be useful to the Lord, Be respectful to your parents, and finally Get beyond love and grief: exist for the good of man.
It is necessary to understand that the Samurai used the term Lord to refer to the feudal lords of that era. I will divert from that to refer to Our Lord and Savior. To be useful to Him is the key to a life worth living. Getting beyond love and grief is simply this; having proper control of your emotions, keeping them in their proper perspective. If given too much credence emotions of any kind can cloud your judgement and cause you to make errors in life. These improper judgements bring forth turmoil and is the opposite of the tranquility we seek.
Also, notice that the above referenced quotes deal with your thought processes. Be aware that any action that you take first originated in the mind and then the action follows. It is therefore imperative that you guard your thoughts as diligently as you guard your material possessions. Be careful to associate with those who are like minded in living a virtuous life. This will eliminate the pull of the world and the desire to fit in with the masses diverting you from the correct way . Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” – John 14:6.
You have one possession that cannot be stripped from you, God has given you free will and you can only give it away. That possession is your rational mind. You give it away when you allow things outside your control to rule you. You give it away when you place anything external (material possessions) above your ruling faculty. “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth, nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.” – Matthew 6: 19-20. If you are right-minded your ruling faculty, your mind, is that treasure!
If you wish to live a life more abundantly, train yourself to live by the above reference virtues. Daily take every opportunity to mentally reference these virtues and compare them to your thoughts and thereby your actions. Take control of your thought process and start the process of living.
